Mihai Ionescu is a banker with a long-standing career in investment banking and special opportunities investment experience in global banks.

Since 2012 Mihai served as Country Head for Deutsche Bank in Romania, where he had a generalist mandate covering the sovereign, corporates, financial institutions and private banking clients across all divisions of the bank. Mihai developed DB’s real estate investment banking franchise in CEE serving the largest REITs in the region and serving on the board of the largest high-end residential developer in Romania. In addition, Mihai developed unique transaction and industry expertise in the IT sector (software development and cyber security).

Mihai started his investment banking career at Credit Suisse in the Financial Institutions group covering European banks in the CEEMEA space (Greece, Turkey, Russia CIS, CEE) and later was part of the leadership of the Emerging Markets coverage group in IBD. He also served as a trader on Credit Suisse’s Special Opportunities desk that had a $2.0bn mandate across the capital structure and across all industries and geographies.

Furthermore, Mihai served as the Chairperson of DB Global Technology S.R.L. (Deutsche Bank’s technology center in Romania creating financial technology for the use of the DB group globally), a subsidiary which he established in 2014 and for which he was successful in securing a €17.5mn state aid subsidy and saw growth to c. 1,400+ FTE in 2022. At DB Global Technology Mihai developed strong, insightful software industry operating and resourcing skills, giving him unique insights into the tech industry.

Mihai holds an undergraduate degree in Finance & Banking from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest. He won the prestigious Chevening FCO Scholarship to study Economics at the University of Oxford, St. Antony's College, where he also earned an Oxford Half Blue for Volleyball. Mihai earned his MBA (Hons), major in Finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Recently, Mihai earned a Certificate in Economic Development as well as the Public Leadership Credential from Harvard Kennedy School.

Mihai is an amateur piano player and a volleyball addict. He lives in Bucharest with his wife and daughter.
